You can track your progress by comparing it against unit requirements and at every stage of your learning and study. You can also get support from your iTAFE mentor and advisor.

Study Guide

There are many ways that you might choose to make your way through the unit. The diagram and suggested sessions (below) will help to plan your learning through the Embed sustainable practices in service operations unit. The sessions outlined below are a suggestion only - you may have another way that you prefer to study


 
Session 1 Identify areas where change can be instigated to enhance environmental sustainability in a service
This includes
·         Develop understanding of impact of human activities on the environment
·         Identify aspects of sustainability in the service
·         Identify areas where change can be instigated to enhance environment sustainability  in all aspects of the service delivery & environments
·         Ensure nature, waste, energy & toxins have been considered
·         Identify areas where change can be instigated to &increase children’s connection with nature
A few points to think about in your blog:
·         What evidence do you think there is to support concerns about the impacts of human activity on the environment?
·         The Early Years Learning Framework states that ‘Sustainable/natural environment helps
children to develop awareness of and respect for the environment’ Could you  give examples of  how  sustainability could be embedded into daily routines and environment?
Could you explain why it is important to support children to develop an understanding & respect for the natural environment?

Session 2 Develop Sustainability Management Plan & Support others in implementing Sustainable practices
This includes
·         Review & identify areas for potential change in service philosophy, policies and procedures in relation to sustainable practice
·         Discuss with stakeholders any identified areas of potential change
·         Finalise changes after agreement with appropriate stakeholders
·         Develop sustainability plan to address change
·         Engage with adults & children to encourage participation in the service’s sustainable practices
A few points to think about in your blog:
·         What would be some effective methods for reviewing & identifying areas of potential change in a service’s procedures in relation to sustainable practice?
·         Explain why it is beneficial to discuss, consult & negotiate a sustainability plan based on identified  changes with all stakeholders, that is, educators, children & families?
Session 3 Support children to develop an understanding & respect for the natural environment
This includes
·         Provide children with information & access to resources about the environment
·         Develop children’s understanding of impact of human activities on the environment
·         Encourage children to exchange thoughts & ideas about sustainable practices through intentional teaching, learning experiences & projects
·         Create  spaces that promote the development of children’s life skills including growing & preparing food
·         Create  spaces that promote the development of children’s life skills including waste management & recycling
·         Explore ethical dilemmas of waste disposal for sustainability with all stakeholders
A few points to think about in your blog:
  • Could you explain why it is important to support children to develop an understanding & respect for the natural environment?
  • What intentional teaching strategies might be used by educators to encourage children to exchange thoughts & ideas about sustainable practices?

Session 4 Provide opportunities for children to explore the natural environment
·         Create opportunities to discuss with children the natural environment  & the interdependence between people, plants & , animals & the land
·         Use intentional teaching strategies including role modelling respect, care & appreciation for both and natural & constructed environments
·         Provide children with a wide range of natural & recycled materials in both indoor & outdoor environments
A few points to think about in your blog:
·         What are the benefits, for both children & the environment, of providing children with natural & recycled materials in both the indoor & outdoor environments ?
·         One of the most important influences on children’s behaviour and attitudes is how the significant adults in their lives act. How could you role model respect, care & appreciation for both and natural & constructed environments?
